The new Assistant Principal at the Dexter High School (DHS) brings some good experience to the role and is a familiar face to many in the school district, especially to the students and staff at Mill Creek Middle School.

With the hiring decision of the Dexter Community Schools Board of Education at their June 22 meeting, David Yon has been named the new DHS Assistant Principal.

Yon has over 20 years of teaching experience and has been a science teacher at Mill Creek since 2020. He’s also been the coach and mentor for the Dread Bolts FTC Robotics Team #16714. Previous teaching experience includes him teaching science at Saline Middle School from 2005-2015 and teaching STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) at the International Christian School in Hong Kong.

In her recommendation to hire Yon, new DHS Principal Theresa Stager said, “after careful consideration of stakeholder feedback, interview performance, reference checks, and professional experience, David Yon was selected as the top candidate for the position.”

“David has a very strong teaching background in Dexter and in other places,” Stager said in her recommendation. “He has a strong track record of excellence in education and in coaching. Of note, he currently coaches Robotics in Dexter. The hiring committee is confident that his vision, commitment to excellence, strong staff and student relationships, and dedication to student and community success make him the ideal choice to complete the Dexter High School administrative team.”

In her report, Stager gave some background to the process. She said the district had been engaged in a “comprehensive search process for the next Assistant Principal of Dexter High School,” which included initial meet-and-greet sessions with qualified candidates, followed by second-round interviews involving staff, teachers, administrators, and the Executive Director of Human Resources. The final two candidates participated in a concluding interview with a committee consisting of building administrators, district administrators and the Superintendent.

Yon’s educational background includes a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Michigan and Master’s degree in Art of Teaching from Marygrove College. He also has a State of Michigan School Administrator Certificate.

Leadership Changes

DCS Superintendent Ryan Bruder said Yon will be a wonderful addition to the DHS administrative team.

“Mr. Yon possesses the qualities needed to be an effective school leader. He builds strong relationships with students, staff, and families, and is known for being calm, thoughtful, and reflective,” Bruder said. “Throughout his time at Mill Creek Middle School, he has demonstrated leadership within the building and through the Dexter Robotics program. As someone who is transitioning from our middle school to our high school, Mr. Yon brings a valuable perspective that will help strengthen the connection between the two schools and support students and families throughout that transition.”

Bruder said Yon succeeds Abby Holland, who will begin her new role as Assistant Director of Special Education this fall.

“We wish both Mr. Yon and Ms. Holland continued success in their new positions,” Bruder said.
