York Township’s withdrawal from the Milan Area Fire Department will take effect July 1, 2027, after the department’s three remaining member municipalities received formal notice.
Supervisor Dave Ludwig said York mailed the notices June 10 and received the registered mail return receipts. MAFD Chief DJ Carpus separately confirmed the city of Milan, London Township and Milan Township received the notices.
The notices begin the formal transition approved by the York Township Board in June. York is working toward full coverage from the Saline Area Fire Authority, which already serves part of the township.
The change will not happen immediately. Township and fire officials still need to determine how coverage will be handled as plans for a new fire substation move forward.
One option under consideration is a contract allowing MAFD to continue serving part of York Township after the township formally withdraws from the department.
Details of a possible agreement, including its cost, coverage area and duration, have not been finalized publicly.
