A new project has been put forth in the Chelsea School District (CSD) that is intended to help the field house and Washington Street Education Center campus.
The proposal is planning for site improvements at the Washington Street Education Center (WSEC) to support the construction of the field house and future campus development. A recommendation report was given by Ross Potgiesser, CSD’s Director of Operations, and CSD Superintendent Mike Kapolka discussed the project with the planner and the school board at the June 22 meeting and then again at the July 20 meeting.
The projected total cost of the improvements is $653,989.60. If approved, the plan would use funding from a combination of the 2009 and 2019 Bond Funds and the Sinking Fund.
In his report, Potgiesser said these improvements represent the next phase of development for the WSEC campus and provide the infrastructure necessary to support the field house project while positioning the site for future growth.
In introducing the proposed project, Kapolka said the recommended work includes the expansion of the parking to the east of the Book Street lot, the creation of a defined pedestrian entry and walkway connecting visitors to the main entrance of the field house, and installation of two stormwater detention ponds, which are necessary to accommodate stormwater management requirements associated with the field house, and expanded parking areas and planned future campus improvements, including a future practice field and potential building expansion.
The project would also include utility and infrastructure work necessary to support current and future operations of the site, including earthwork, drainage improvements, water service, electrical service upgrades, exterior building connections and site accessibility improvements.
The school board has not yet made a decision on this project. It’s expected they will revisit it at the next meeting in August.
