Veterans Park has planned updates as a part of a series of park improvements across Chelsea according to Parks and Recreation’s Sharon Castle, who presented at the June 8 city council meeting.

While remaining a memorial site for community members who have served in the armed forces, Veterans Park on N. Main St. will now also feature an additional section that encourages children to engage with STEM-centered (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) activities.

“The proposed improvements are a result of listening to community members, evaluating the condition and cost of what’s in the park, and what we’re proposing, and recommending a space that reflects how residents want to see kids playing in it, and the space being utilized as part of the Parks’ planning process,” Castle said.

Improvements will also draw focus to Lett’s Creek, which runs through the park.

“Recent Park surveys showed that Lett’s Creek is an underutilized asset in our community, and I know even talking to folks who don’t live in Chelsea, they’re not even aware of Let’s Creek,” Castle said. “So, this is really exciting. Including the idea of science and STEM as a park focus, that’s a new concept in the community.”

According to Castle’s presentation, the majority of work done in the park will be finished by the end of the year and is being funded by the Chelsea Community Foundation, which allotted a $15,000 grant to the project. Once the play equipment is selected, installation and water and environmental education programs can begin.

“It’s an opportunity to show how creeks are part of our ecosystem and our natural history, and to introduce STEM to kids and families that are visiting the park, or walking through Timber Town, or to a baseball, or pickle ball, whatever they may be doing,” she said.

The park will maintain its memorial signage “that honors the reflective nature of the Veterans Memorial” according to the packet, while also including historical information on the park, city and its ecosystem.

The ribbon-cutting ceremony and official opening of the new section of the park is scheduled for spring of 2027.
