Huron Valley Ambulance (HVA) has responded to medical emergencies at the Ann Arbor Art Fair since HVA was created by Washtenaw County’s hospitals in 1981. Specialized response teams are assigned throughout the fairs, and work with local public
safety personnel to locate, treat, and transport sick and injured participants for medical treatment. HVA provides this service at no charge to event organizers or municipal government.
HVA deploys “bike teams” that respond quickly to emergencies with Advanced Life Support capabilities, and “Gator teams” capable of transporting patients through crowded streets to ambulances located adjacent to the Art Fair. HVA’s first aid station was also staffed during Art Fair operating hours.
HVA’s special event supervisor Shane Flynn reported, “This year presented some unique challenges with the combination of high heat and humidity, Canadian wildfire smoke impacting the air quality, and the potential threat for severe weather. The event overall went smoothly and without complication. We appreciated everyone’s cooperation and understanding during this year’s event, as well as the coordination provided by the City of Ann Arbor Emergency Operations Center.”
This year, HVA responded to 19 incidents. Four patients were transported to local hospitals, and three were provided with basic first aid. Many incidents were related to heat stress, and one patient suffered from multiple bee stings.
In comparison, 11 patients were cared for during the 2025 Art Fair, with five transported.
