Chelsea City Council approved the second police vehicle replacement of this year, a 2016 Ford Taurus with over 104,000 miles on it, at the June 8 meeting.
“Due to the mileage in the vehicle, the repairs on it are getting very costly,” Chelsea Police Chief Kevin Kazyak said. “One piece to the muffler system was over $1,000 just because it had to be a factory item, and because of the age of the vehicle, they’re not making after factory market parts on those vehicles, or we’re having problems getting it.”
The replacement vehicle will be one of two administrative vehicles in the Chelsea fleet. It will be used for detective bureau training classes and would not need to be police-rated, unlike the other vehicle purchased earlier this year. According to Kazyak, administrative vehicles are unlikely to become involved in a chase or a situation where it would need to be police-rated.
The total cost of the replacement, which is a 2025 Chevrolet Traverse, will come out to $39,968. The previous car will be sold at auction.
The purchase was approved unanimously by the council.
