Mac’s Acadian Seafood Shack to Celebrate 30 Years in Downtown Saline

Mac’s Acadian Seafood Shack will celebrate its 30th anniversary with a public open house on Aug. 1, marking three decades as a downtown Saline restaurant and family business.

Founded in 1996 by Wally and Cindy MacNeil, the restaurant’s history is closely tied to the family’s decision to move to Saline in search of an inclusive school district for their twin sons, Todd and Jamie, who were born with cerebral palsy. According to the MacNeils, they found not only the educational environment they were seeking, but also a supportive community that became an important part of the restaurant’s story.

While many people associate Cajun cuisine with spicy food, owner Wally MacNeil said the restaurant has always emphasized traditional home-style cooking.

“People hear ‘Cajun Food’ and think hot or spicy, but that’s not really the truth,” said owner Wally MacNeil. “Cajun cooking is Southern country cooking – it’s family cooking. Everyone’s gumbo is different, everyone’s jambalaya is different. It’s about making something honest with what you have. That’s always been our approach here.”

Over the years, the restaurant has become known for its Acadian-inspired seafood, hospitality and long-standing relationships with customers. MacNeil credited the restaurant’s longevity to its employees and patrons.

“We’ve been fortunate to have good people working for us since day one,” MacNeil said. “That kind of consistency is rare, and it’s the reason we’re still here.”

The restaurant has also partnered with and supported a variety of local community organizations over the years.

MacNeil said one of the most rewarding aspects of reaching the 30-year milestone has been watching generations of families continue to visit the restaurant.

“The people who were regular customers when we first opened – many aren’t here anymore,” MacNeil reflected. “But now we have the second generation, ‘my parents used to eat here all the time, now I eat here all the time.’ We’re employing grandkids of customers from 30 years ago. That sense of community is the thing I love the most.”

To commemorate the anniversary, Mac’s will host a public open house from 2 to 4:30 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 1. The event will include light appetizers and an opportunity for community members to share memories and celebrate the milestone.

The anniversary celebration will also launch “30 Days of Anniversary Features,” a month-long series of special menu items, returning favorites and stories from the restaurant’s history. Additional anniversary events are planned throughout the year.
