It’s only 16 feet long, but it’s going to give visitors to the Liberty Pond Nature Area a better way to reach further into this unique spot in Scio Township.
To move this plan, the Scio Township Board approved using up to $18,000 for the design proposal from OHM for the Liberty Pond Nature Area boardwalk project.
In the report from Murphy Harrington, Scio’s Parks Preserves & Pathways Director, the township’s Capital Improvement Plan includes the Liberty Pond Nature Area Pathway Improvement project.
“The purpose of this project is to install a 10-foot wide, 16-foot-long timber boardwalk founded on concrete abutments over a drainage swale/depression within the Liberty Pond Nature Area,” Harrington said. “The pathway will allow access for pedestrians over an area that is wet due to a depression where drainage flows.”
The nature area is located on West Liberty Road, west of Wildwood Lane. Scio Township acquired the land in 2016. It features 50 acres of open field and wetlands, and .75 miles of mowed trails, the Liberty Loop.
OHM Advisors (OHM) submitted the proposal for professional engineering services to construct a boardwalk within the Liberty Pond Nature Area over the drainage swale/depression near the northern end of the park.
Harrington said the boardwalk design will comply with the most recent guidelines for pathway construction including the American Association of State Highway Transportation Official’s Guide for Development of Bicycle Facilities, and the American’s with Disabilities Act.
