Residents from several local school districts have more time to apply for an open seat on the Washtenaw Intermediate School District Board of Education.
WISD has extended the application deadline to Monday, June 29, for a vacancy that will run until the next WISD board election in June 2027.
The opening is available to residents of the Chelsea, Dexter, Lincoln, Manchester, Milan, Saline, Whitmore Lake and Ypsilanti school districts. Ann Arbor Public Schools residents are not eligible because state law limits the number of ISD board members who may live in the same school district, and WISD already has two sitting board members who live within the Ann Arbor Public Schools boundaries.
Applicants must be registered voters in their school district, at least 18 years old, U.S. citizens and able to attend regular board meetings at 5 p.m. on the second and fourth Tuesdays of each month, along with occasional workshops and special meetings.
WISD is asking applicants to submit a letter of intent and resume. Letters should detail the applicant’s qualifications, experience with public schools and school governance, and commitment to educational equity.
According to WISD, priority will be given to applicants who demonstrate an understanding of equity, have prior board experience and are actively involved in their community. Experience with public school systems, children and youth, or students with special needs is also preferred.
Letters of intent and resumes should be sent to Mary Jane Tramontin, president of the WISD Board of Education, at [email protected] or mailed to Washtenaw Intermediate School District, Attention: Mary Jane Tramontin, 1819 S. Wagner Road, P.O. Box 1406, Ann Arbor, MI 48106-1406.
The board is expected to review applications Tuesday, June 30, and interview qualified candidates Wednesday, July 22, at a special board meeting. The board will appoint a new trustee after the final interview.
