Going before school boards around Washtenaw County is a resolution asking districts to support renewal of the Washtenaw Intermediate School District Special Education Millage.
This millage renewal is proposed to go before voters county-wide in the November 5 General Election. The Saline, Dexter and Chelsea school boards have all looked at the renewal proposal.
The Dexter Community Schools Board of Education reviewed the resolution at its May 20 meeting. The meeting packet detailed the resolution:
“Before the WISD board votes to place the Special Education millage renewal on the November 2024 ballot, they need a resolution from each local district school board supporting the renewal. The millage renewal language will combine two previous special education millages (that both expire in June 2025) into one combined millage renewal.”
According to the renewal proposal, the millage will be for 12 years and will generate approximately $51 million dollars a year for special education services for students in Washtenaw County.
DCS said in its packet, “Because it is a renewal, there is no change to the current property tax rate. Dexter Community Schools would lose approximately $3,097,574 if this renewal does not pass.”
The DCS school board approved a resolution in support of the WISD placing a special education millage renewal on the November 5, 2024 ballot, as did Chelsea and Saline.
Voters should expect to see this ballot question before them.
