Serious Two Vehicle Crash in Sylvan Township

A head-on collision on M-52 caused both drivers to be injured with one being transported by Survival Flight to the University of Michigan Hospital.

The Michigan State Police said at 10:45 a.m. on June 25, state troopers responded to a two-vehicle crash on M-52 near Jerusalem Road. The Chelsea Area Fire Authority (CAFA) also responded to the scene in Sylvan Township.

Chelsea Area Fire Chief Robert Arbini said CAFA was called to a two vehicle accident on M-52, south of I-94.

“This was a head on collision involving a car and a pickup truck,” Arbini said. “Based on the damage, this was a high speed impact.” 

The Michigan State Police (MSP) said the preliminary investigation indicates a 2013 Ford Taurus driven by a 48-year-old woman from Stockbridge was traveling northbound on M-52 when she failed to negotiate a curve, crossed the center line and collided head-on with a southbound 2026 Dodge Ram pickup truck driven by a 29-year-old man from Farmington Hills.

Arbini said Chelsea Police arrived on the scene, followed by Chelsea Fire and HVA. He said based on the car driver’s condition, Survival Flight was notified and reached the scene, landing directly on M-52.

The MSP said the driver of the Taurus sustained serious injuries and was transported by Survival Flight to the hospital in Ann Arbor. As of June 26, the MSP said her current condition was unknown. The driver of the truck sustained minor injuries and was transported to Trinity Health Chelsea Hospital for treatment.

Arbini said the driver of the car had to be extricated from her vehicle. After initial treatment by Chelsea Fire and HVA personnel, Arbini said Survival Flight arrived on the scene, took over patient care and transported her to U of M Hospital via helicopter. 

In its initial findings, the MSP said at this time it did not appear drugs and alcohol were factors in the crash. However, as of June 26 the MSP said the investigation was still ongoing.
