The tough D1 regular season schedule paid off for the Dexter girls’ soccer team as the Dreadnaughts swept through its opponents to claim the D2 district title with a 2-0 win in Chelsea Saturday.
The Dreadnaughts came into the tournament with a 7-8-2 record, with a schedule that was almost all D1 schools, and it showed with the Dreadnaughts moving back to the D2 tournament after playing in D1 the last couple of seasons.
The Dreads defense was stifling in keeping the red-hot Maples out of the net. Adrian entered the game with an 11-game winning streak and was unbeaten in its last 15 contests before Dexter shut them out Saturday.
Dexter struck first when Annamarie Myint put one past the Maples goaltender for a 1-0 lead in the first half.
The Dreads continued to pressure the Maples and increased their lead to 2-0 just before halftime when Jillian Lower found herself open in front of the Adrian net and knocked a high pass past the goaltender for a 2-0 halftime lead.
The Dexter defense and goaltender Emily Hosman did the rest in the second half, keeping the Maples off the board to earn the title.
The district title is the first for the Dreadnaughts since 2019.
Dexter improved to 9-8-2 overall and advances to the D2 Regional at Waterford Kettering where they will meet Orchard Lake St. Mary Tuesday at 5:00 PM.
